Research summary
SARS-CoV-2 is a coronavirus that emerged in late 2019 in Wuhan, China. When this virus infects a person, it can cause a life-threatening condition known as COronaVIrus Disease 2019 (COVID-19). Since 2019, hundreds of thousands people have died from COVID-19 across the world. Fortunately, not everyone that has COVID-19 dies, and some people only have a few mild or no symptoms. It is important that we can detect the people that will become very sick with COVID-19, so that we are able to give them treatment that may save their lives. One way to identify these people is to test their blood for certain chemicals, known as biomarkers. Biomarkers are chemicals that indicate the presence and/or seriousness of a particular disease. Previous research suggests that there are a few biomarkers that may be helpful in COVID-19 patients, but a lot of this research was done on patients in China. This study aims to see whether the biomarkers identified by other researchers are good biomarkers in COVID-19 patients in an NHS hospital in Essex. This study also aims to look at common blood test results and see if they form a pattern in COVID-19 patients that can help doctors to identify and treat these patients quickly and effectively.
