Research summary
With the imminent threat of a second wave of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), identifying modifiable risk factors associated with increased mortality are crucial in developing strategies to improve outcomes. Our aim is to describe clinical characteristics and determine the independent risk factors of mortality in patients with COVID-19 hospitalized in the UK. We wish to answer the following questions: 1) What are the clinical characteristics and risk factors associated with in-hospital mortality in patients hospitalized with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in United Kingdom? 2) Is renal dysfunction a significant independent predictor of mortality in COVID-19? The design of this study is an observational, single-center case series of consecutive hospitalized patients with confirmed COVID-19 admitted to Queen Elizabeth Hospital, London from March 12, 2020 to July 12, 2020. The primary outcome will be death during the patient’s hospitalization. COVID-19 cases included will be those confirmed via a positive result on polymerase chain reaction or radiological signs of SARS-CoV-2 infection. Demographics, clinical presentations, laboratory tests, radiological assessments, and in-hospital outcomes will be collected and analyzed. Univariate analysis and multivariate Cox regression will be performed to determine independent predictors of in-hospital mortality.
