Research summary
Blood cancers and precancerous conditions are often caused by alterations in the genetic code (DNA) of a cell in addition to other ill-defined changes in the environment and immune cells of the blood and bone marrow, the factory that makes all blood in the body. More research is needed to improve understanding of what is wrong and hopefully to develop better treatments. The research proposed in this project includes the analysis of blood, bone marrow and immune cells, the proteins and metabolites they produce and the changes that occur in the bone marrow environment where blood diseases happen and how this changes in response to treatment in patients with blood cancers/precancers. These parameters will be studied in the laboratory and also in a computerised mathematical model of the disease in order to simulate patient responses to treatment with chemotherapy and compare responses in the laboratory to what the patient is experiencing during the normal course of treatment so that better treatments can be made. This approach would enable a personalised treatment for each individual patient and each disease sub-type with the help of computer algorithms and laboratory models (without the use of animals). This study is purely a sample and data procurement protocol for laboratory research.
