Research summary
Background and Aims: SIGN 115 recommends 15-20% weight loss for severe and complicated obesity. Weight loss maintenance can be achieved in around 33% of patients at 12 months. The BEYOND study consists of 3 work packages: Work Package 1 (WP1): examine changes in body composition with substantial (target >15kg) weight loss. Work Package 2 (WP2): characterize the metabolic adaptations during weight loss and maintenance. Work Package 3(WP3): evaluate BED and EQ-5D questionnaires, rescue packages.
Subjects and measurements: 20 women, BMI >=30kg/m2, 18 – 65 years, will be recruited word of mouth and advertisement. At baseline, all will undergo whole body MRI scans, gait, muscle strength and WOMAC questioner anthropometry, indirect calorimetry, blood tests HbA1C, lipid profile, leptin, thyroid hormones, gut microbiota analysis, Binge Eating Disorder and EQ - 5D questionnaires).
Diet Intervention: All participants, will undertake Counterweight Plus. This consists of: 12 – 20 weeks 800+ Total Diet Replacement Plan, 6-8 weeks Food Reintroduction and up to 104 weeks Weight Loss Maintenance based on maintaining daily calorie restriction.REC name
