Research summary
Residual renal function (RRF) is an important predictor of survival in haemodialysis patients. At present, RRF is measured using inter-dialytic urine collection which is cumbersome and inconvenient for patients. Serum levels of some proteins such as Beta-2 microglobulin, Cystatin C and Beta-trace protein have been suggested as alternatives to urine collection for estimating RRF. Although beta-trace protein (BTP) has been shown to be related to residual renal function, the association between serum BTP and level of RRF has not been studied before. We propose to examine the reliability of serum BTP as a marker of RRF in haemodialysis patients. For this, we will use the blood sample obtained as part of routine care to analyse BTP levels in 200 patients. Information on RRF will be retrieved through medical records.
