Research summary
BEFORE-MS aims to gather prospective, contemporaneous samples of cerebrospinal fluid, blood and urine from patients undergoing routine outpatient diagnostic lumbar puncture and blood tests for investigation of possible demyelinating disease.
It is expected that the majority of patients will go on to be given a diagnosis of multiple sclerosis (MS). Only after diagnosis of MS will patients be invited by their clinical team to participate in an observational study - Future MS. This is a distinct, national project and will require separate consent for participation at the Future MS first study visit.
The research samples for BEFORE-MS will be taken in parallel with the routine clinical samples, and will not therefore require a separate additional procedure. The samples will be stored in a biobank and later linked to clinical outcome and specifically with Future MS, but also additional clinical information derived from NHS GGC clinical portal. Samples will be analysed for potential disease biomarkers.
