Research summary
The purpose of this study is to improve efficiency within Emergency Departments and reduce time patients spend in the department. Through Bingli, an online flexible history taking tool, patients are asked questions about what brought them to the Emergency Department. The Bingli tool then generates a list of their most likely diagnoses and suggests the investigations the patient should have.
In this study, the lists of diagnoses and the suggested investigations created by the Bingli tool will not be seen by the patients or the doctors and nurses looking after them. It will only be seen by researchers who will compare the lists of likely diagnoses and suggested investigations with what the doctors and nurses actually did when they were in the Emergency Department. In future the tool could be used to start investigations and treatments earlier, and therefore speed the progress of patients through the ED.
We are inviting patients to participate who are 18 years old and over, and who have self-presented to the Emergency Department. We anticipate approximately 36,000 patients who may be eligible to participate will present to the Emergency Department over the 3-month period the study will be running. Eligible patients will receive a paper copy participant information sheet at the Emergency Department reception desk, followed by a text message after booking into the department, inviting them to participate.
If patients consent to participate via the link in the text message, they will be directed to the Bingli tool, to answer questions on their smartphone. This will take about 5 minutes so is likely to be completed while they are waiting to be seen.
We will compare the clinical diagnoses and suggested investigations proposed by Bingli with those determined by the ED clinicians.
To explore barriers and facilitators to the use of the Bingli tool, up to 20 participants will also be invited to participate in a short interview about their experience of using the Bingli tool in the Emergency Department.
