Research summary
Exercise has demonstrated benefits in urological cancer patients. However, clinical trials have not been fully representative of the population the NHS serves with little or no ethnic minority participation reported in these studies. This needs to be addressed to ensure that exercise research fully reflects and addresses the whole populations needs.
Our project aims to increase the understanding of the needs, barriers to participation and previous experiences of patients from ethnic minority groups with urological cancers exercising and their thoughts about participating in exercise clinical trials. This knowledge is important to inform strategies that improve representation and inclusivity. This research will enable us devise improved exercise trials and to inform and make recommendations about strategies to increase the diversity and representation of patients taking part in exercise clinical trials.
Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement has been part of this project from the outset. Following ethical approval, we will ask individuals from different minority ethnic groups, with a previous diagnosis of urological cancer, to complete a questionnaire and take part in a single focus group activity with 5-8 others. We aim to recruit a total of 20-30 patients. Within the focus group, we will ask patients to provide a summary of their experience and if they felt that there were any barriers. All focus groups will be transcribed by a professional organisation and analysed before being published in an academic journal.
The project is a partnership between the University of Derby and clinicians from Southmead Hospital, Bristol. Patients who participate will receive reimbursement for their time in the form of a £20 voucher. It is expected that this project will enable researchers to have a clearer understanding of why patients participate in clinical trials and use this information to increase participation in future research
