Research summary
This study aims to understand the barriers to access dental care for children with cleft lip and palate .
Children born with a cleft lip and palate see a team of specialists from birth until they are adults. They need surgical and non surgical treatment. Taking care of teeth is an important part of care needed for good management of this condition. These children are looked after by a specialist Cleft team at Alder Hey Hospital, but sometimes it's difficult for them to get treatment locally, where they live. The Alder Hey team provides treatment for cleft lip and palate patients from a wide area including North Wales, Isle of Man, Wirral, Liverpool, Preston, Blackpool, Crewe, Knowsley, Warrington and Cheshire. It is important to make sure that treatments that need lots of appointments are available to children locally and they don't need to travel long distances for every appointment.
Having a clean and healthy mouth is important for success of bone grafting surgery (moving bone from the hip to the gum) when children are around 9-11 years old.
This study aims to understand the barriers related to accessing dental treatment by interviewing parents of 7-9 year old children with a cleft lip and palate. The aim is to talk to parents of children with different types of cleft, medical issues, ethnicities and backgrounds to have a wider understanding of problems related to access to dental care.
