  • Research summary

Current audits demonstrate that it is often day 4 of the infant’s life before breast milk is available to feed the baby. Nutrition in the first years of life can permanently transform an individual’s growth and development, promote health and prevent disease in the short and long term, and has a major role to play in public health (NICE, 2005). \nUse of focus groups will aim to explore the views of women who have had a baby on NICU as well as those of midwives and neonatal nurses working with and supporting these women. This research will lead to an understanding of why there is a delay in lactation initiation and will underpin any necessary changes in policy and practice.\nThe focus groups will take place within the hospital building (Cental Manchester Foundation Trust) and last no longer than an hour. Women will be interviewed separately to NHS staff to allow each group to talk freely and obtain more honest answers/feedback.
