Research summary
A qualitative research to investigate women’s behaviour and life style before pregnancy
Oral clefts (harelip) are birth defects known to be multifactorial in origin, in that both genes and environmental factors contribute to their causation. Interaction of environmental factors with a genetically susceptible individuals lead to clefts. Some factors that increase the occurrence of facial clefts are; family history, use of drugs, stress, vitamins deficiency, infections, intoxication, obesity and marriage with close relatives. We can divide the risks into modifiable risk factors and unmodifiable risk factors. Smoking, alcohol drinking, obesity, vitamins deficiency and teratogenic drugs can be modified by education, health promotion and behavioural modification.
The study will work on the modifiable risk factors by investigating women’s behaviour on amending these risks before pregnancy. This will be done in two countries, Scotland and Saudi Arabia. The following question will be answered: What do women know about preconception care? What are the barriers and facilitators for women in acquiring healthy behaviour before pregnancy? What do women know about clefts, and do they relate its occurrence to their own health being?
The study will be a qualitative research involving audio taped one-to-one interviews with women of 18 – 45 years old, having one year old or less child. There will be two groups in the project. Study group involves women of children with cleft. Control group involves women of children without clefts.
The participants will be recruited by Dundee Dental Hospital, Tayside health visitor system, Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow and the dental clinics in King Abdul-Aziz University Dental Hospital in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
The interviews will be carried out in the time and location of participant choice. There will be only one interview of 60 – 90 minutes and a follow up 15-20 minute-phone interview will be conducted if needed only.REC name
