Research summary
The aim of this study is to explore the experiences of therapy for people with learning disabilities, and to explore their carers’ and clinical psychologists’ perspective of therapeutic change. Through semi-structured interviews with all three groups (service user with learning disability, their carer and their clinical psychologist), it is hoped to elicit the aspects of therapy that promoted change for the service user with learning disabilities and the possible barriers to change. Additionally similarities and differences between the perspectives of the service user, carer and clinical psychologist will be explored to move towards an integrated understanding of barriers and facilitators to positive therapeutic change.
The study will be a multiple case design and will employ qualitative methods to explore multiple perspectives of the therapeutic process. The study will be conducted in an NHS setting. Qualitative data will be collected and analysed using Thematic Analysis.
