Research summary
As the worldwide prevalence of obesity rises, the number of individuals undergoing bariatric (or obesity) surgery, such as gastric banding or gastric bypass, continues to increase. Increased risk of cancer, including colorectal cancer, is known to be associated with obesity. However, the effect of baratric surgery on colorectal cancer risk is not clear. A Swedish nationwide study performed by the applicants suggested that colorectal cancer risk might actually increase following bariatric surgery. The objective of this study is to confirm AND EXTEND these previous findings that there is an increase in colorectal cancer risk after bariatric surgery, which is higher than that of obese non-operated individuals. We will use existing health datasets and established methodology to compare colorectal cancer incidence in the ‘bariatric’ group with incidence in an obese non-surgical cohort.
