  • Data collection arrangements

All patients attending the bariatric and metabolic service will be asked to complete a set of standardised and validated self-report measures as part of routine practice. These data include patient background characteristics (i.e., sociodemographic, and clinical information), standard measures of health and functioning, and psychological variables relevant to patients’ treatment needs and responses to treatment. Patients complete questionnaires either online (via Qualtrics) or a paper hardcopy. These data will continue to be collected for new patients. Paper based questionnaires will be stored in a locked filing cabinet in a secure location on-site within the bariatric and metabolic surgery department, LGT. Once they have been uploaded to the research database, they will be destroyed in line with local trust procedures.

To facilitate patient and service needs, we may conduct audits via focus groups and/or interviews. This may tackle important topics including but not limited to patients’ experience of surgery; beliefs about psychological co-morbidities; and beliefs about treatment. In this instance, we will audio record these meetings (with patient consent), transcribe them verbatim, and analyse the data using a qualitative method such as thematic analysis.

  • Research programme

The research database aims to support individuals attending routine bariatric surgery and bariatric psychology pathways. To our knowledge, there are no other research databases of this nature, highlighting a clear need and gap for this population. Existing evidence on psychological aspects of bariatric surgery is scarce and it is hoped that this database will directly inform local psychology service pathways (improving patient care) as well as build wider evidence and knowledge.
