Research summary
This study aims to collect umbilical cord blood, saliva, buccal swab (cheek cells) and blood from newborn babies and their mothers. The samples will be deidentified and sent for DNA extraction and Whole Genome Sequencing. No clinically relevant analysis will be undertaken and so there will be no healthcare information generated. This will help us understand which types of sample will give us the best yield of DNA and how contaminated the samples are. This work will go towards informing the type of sample that we will collect for a much bigger study looking at the the feasibility and utility of Whole Genome Screening for newborns in 2023 this is called the Newborns Genome Programme.
