Research summary
Some children who have experienced a life threatening illness have reported memories and/or thought processes during time of unconsciousness in the pediatric critical care unit or also called pediatric intensive care unit (PICU). These memories may include visual or auditory perceptions, such as, seeing relatives, seeing a bright light, feelings of peace and happiness. Many adults have reported similar occurrences during unconsciousness at the time of life threatening illness. However, studies that explore these types of memories and awareness during loss of consciousness at the time of life threatening illness are limited to adults. More information is needed to study these experiences in children. This is a mixed method cross-sectional study with the objective to determine the prevalence of awareness experience and its qualitative themes during PICU, and explore the association among psychological sequelae and quality of life with reported experience of awareness following PICU.
