Research summary
The current assessment and management of alcohol withdrawal syndrome (AWS) relies on the use of a subjective scale that has been shown to be poorly reproducible, and results in patients receiving incorrect doses of medication and a prolonged hospital stay. We propose to use a wrist-mounted device to objectively measure physiological changes (e.g. autonomic parameters of the nervous system such as tremor and sweating) that occur during AWS, and to use these data in the development of a new approach to objectively monitor and treat AWS. This idea could reduce medication errors, release nursing time and lead to more efficient patient discharges.
