Research summary
Autistic characteristics and often co-occurring anxiety disorders can lead to autistic children showing distress in a way that health professionals, including Orthoptists, find challenging to manage. With the growing evidence of the impact of challenging hospital visits on carers and their child’s health outcomes, it is important that carer attitudes are explored to better understand if and where improvements can be made in their child’s Orthoptic appointment. To date there is no study that has explored carer experience of autistic children in the Orthoptic Department or compared this to carer experience of neurotypical children. The aim of this research is to compare the anxiety levels of carers of autistic and typical neurodevelopment children attending their child’s Orthoptic examination. A validated questionnaire will be used to quantify the anxiety levels of carers who have attended the Orthoptic Department with their child.
