Research summary
This study is looking at what adults think about female genital mutilation (FGM), a practice involving partial or total removal of the external female genitalia for non-medical reasons. We are hoping to learn if people from FGM-practising communities think FGM should stop. It is estimated that 60,000 girls are at risk of FGM in the UK. It will be carried out as a questionnaire to persons accessing specialist FGM services at University College London Hospital and the North Middlesex University Hospital. Although two studies have been conducted regarding attitudes towards FGM in the UK (in Bristol and London), this is the first study of its kind to incorporate an anonymous questionnaire for adult men and women accessing FGM services. Therefore, this research may help improve future patients’ clinical care by informing and shaping government policies, funding and further research.
