Research summary
A cross-sectional survey-based study, recruiting adolescents aged 12-21 from a community sample and a clinical NHS sample. The online survey will include self-reported demographic questions and validated psychometric questionnaires. The study aims to investigate whether levels of attachment anxiety and/or attachment avoidance can predict endorsed functions of self-harm. The study will also investigate whether any potential relationships between attachment insecurity and self-harm are mediated by difficulties in emotional regulation.
Participants are recruited via social media and third sector advertising (community sample) and via their allocated clinicians at 2 participating health boards (NHS Dumfries and Galloway and NHS Borders (clinical sample), and participants are only required to complete the survey once.
The University of Edinburgh has made an amount of £250 available to aid recruitment and will be spent on gift cards, which upon completion of survey participants will be given a link to a separate survey where they can enter their email to be entered into a draw to win one of these. (2x £50 and 6x £25 available).
