Research summary
Atrial fibrillation is a common heart condition that can cause the heart's upper chamber to become enlarged, which can lead to a type of heart valve problem called functional mitral regurgitation. This valve problem is complex and involves changes to the size and shape of the valve leaflets. It can cause blood to leak back into the heart and can have a range of severity. Similarly, atrial fibrillation can also lead to functional tricuspid regurgitation, which is another type of valve problem. These valve problems can have significant consequences for a person's health and can be associated with other conditions. Research is needed to better understand the risk factors for these conditions and how they progress over time.
