Research summary
Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the commonest heart rhythm disorder that is associated with significant morbidity. The treatment of AF is challenging and may involve a procedure called catheter ablation which is a complex procedure and involves risks. AF is due to structural changes within the top chambers of the heart. The more structural changes, the less likely it is for successful restoration of normal rhythm. There are a number of blood tests that represent structural changes in different tissues, and it these may be useful markers of structural changes in the heart. If there was a good link between levels of these markers taken as a blood sample (for example in the outpatient clinic), then this can be a useful test to determine which patients may benefit complex interventions to restore normal rhythm. The aim of this study is to compare levels of these markers taken from blood from the upper chambers of the heart and compare them to levels in the peripheral circulation. Furthermore using imaging information from magnetic resonance imaging, echocardiography and at the time of catheter ablation, we want to determine whether these tests give an indication of the degree of structural change, and also how these markers relate to long term outcomes from strategies to restore normal rhythm.
