Research summary
This study aims to assess pelvic organ function i.e. bladder, bowel and sexual function in female patients after delivery of a baby. This is an important area of research as conditions arising from pelvic organ dysfunction such as urinary incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse have been identified as major contributors to maternal morbidity in the long-term. There is a lack of research assessing pelvic organ function in the early postpartum period. This study will therefore add to existing research in the field and will aid better understanding of the course of development pelvic organ dysfunction in women after childbirth. This is a qualitative study involving a questionnaire that aims to explore the incidence and types of pelvic organ dysfunction in the study population 6 weeks after delivery. The questions will consider patient demographics, features of the delivery and questions to assess the function of the pelvic organs. The questionnaire will be administered on the phone or in person. The study will be carried out at a single hospital site and study participants will be recruited from an electronic database of hospital attendees. To be eligible , participants must be 4-8 weeks post-partum at the time of the study.
