  • Research summary

This study will mathematically quantify the abnormalities of the dynamics of facial expressions in patients suffering from unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP), using 4D images that have been previously captured according to the routine post-operative protocol for UCLP patients on the NHS care pathway in the age range of 13-17 years. Similarly, 4D images for non-cleft control subjects were captured for a previous study (Mahmoud Alagha, REC ref: 17/SW/0233) and these will be used in the analysis. Due to the sophisticated nature of the proposed mathematical analysis, the control data will need to be augmented by capturing 4D images for a new cohort of non-cleft subjects in the same age range and geographic location, as the previous study. Analysis of the data will include facial landmark identification of the captured images using computer software. This will be evaluated at rest and during facial expressions. The relationship between residual asymmetry at rest and throughout the course of each facial expression will be evaluated. The magnitude, speed, symmetry, and pattern of landmark displacements during facial expressions will be measured. This study will test the null hypothesis that there are no statistically significant differences between static and dynamic asymmetry of the surgically managed cleft cases and control group.
