  • Research summary

This research projects seeks to investigate the impact of clinical formulations made collaboratively between therapists and clients undertaking Cognitive Analytic Therapy (CAT). CAT is a therapy that integrates aspects of other therapies including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), particularly emphasising interpersonal difficulties and therapist and client collaboration. A clinical formulation can be defined as the conceptualisation or sense-making of a client’s clinical difficulties. This project is investigating how a formulation impacts upon clinical outcomes including clients insight into: difficulties; therapeutic alliance; and identified clinical difficulties.
This is relevant for clients undergoing both CAT and other talking therapies, in that the impact of therapists sharing formulations is under researched.
The study will include clients for whom CAT therapy has been established to be appropriate. The research will take place at a community outpatient NHS venue. For those clients who consent to participate in the study, consent will involve therapy as usual (that they would have received irrespective of this project) and additional assessment forms that will take approximately ten minutes per day to carry out for the duration of their therapy (normally lasting 8 sessions over approximately two months). Additionally participation will involve taking part in a follow up interview (via phone or in person based on client preference).
