Research summary
The research will assess the effectiveness of the pre-assessment counselling (PAC) appointment at informing patients about dementia and alleviating fears and anxiety in relation to diagnosis. This will be achieved by assessing patients’ fears and attitudes towards dementia before and after PAC. Understanding how and why PAC is useful and effective in reducing stigma and anxiety surrounding dementia will facilitate mental health and wellbeing for dementia patients and their carers. We aim to build a standard of best practice for dementia diagnosis counselling, similar to established counselling related to HIV diagnosis.
