Research summary
The current COVID-19 pandemic has seen a rise in the number of new diagnosis type 1 diabetes (T1D) in children and young people. With potential difficulties with access to healthcare, and the associated potential for delay in diagnosis, there is a risk of rising incidence of late presentation and possible complications like diabetic ketoacidosis.
The study proposes to assess the incidence, presentation and demographics of children and young people newly diagnosed with T1D in the Southern Trust during the year of the pandemic, and compare this with the previous 12 months.
Through a short questionnaire we will also explore the patients journey and experience from developing symptoms of T1D to diagnosis and education, and the potential impact on how the diabetes team delivers education and establishes relationships with those patients and there families.REC name
