  • Research summary

This is a prospective observational study which aims to compare the measurement of intraocular pressure (the pressure within the eye) (IOP) between the gold standard of 50 years the Goldmann applanation tonometry (GAT) and other tonometers currently employed in clinical practice. These include an electronic tonometer (Tonopen), a rebound tonometer (ICare) and non contact tonometers (Ocular Response Analyzer and Corvis ST). These instruments work in different manners and may be affected by eye structure in different ways and hence produce different measured IOP. IOP is an important measure in all aspect of eye care and could be considered the counterpart of blood pressure for general health.

All subjects will be patients attending the eye department for management of their ocular disease. The subjects will undergo IOP measurement using all the tonometers in random order on a single visit. One of the measures of IOP would have been required for general clinical care in any case as this is a routine measurement for all patients.

In our analysis we will include healthy individuals, patients affected by glaucoma, ocular hypertension, corneal diseases, cataracts and other ocular pathologies. We aim to recruit 365 patients as per statistical advice.

There will be no follow up needed in this study.
