  • Research summary

Hypodontia is present in 3-5% of the general population. The Quality of Life (QOL) of patients with hereditary hypodontia is undoubtedly improved with prosthetic and surgical intervention. The psycho-social impact of missing teeth can have a serious impact on patients’ development in their early years, which will in turn impact on their adult life. This directly effects their quality of life.
This project hopes to evaluate these issues further and determine the patient related factors that are important in trying to improve their outcome and satisfaction. The study will involve investigating patients with hypodontia who attend secondary care for dental treatment to improve their oral function and aesthetic appearance and to evaluate their QOL before and after treatment. The study will involve three patient questionnaires and will not affect patient treatment.
Two groups of participants will be recruited, Group A and and Group B.
Group A will be participants who have completed dental treatment, a control group of participants without hypodontia will be matched by age and gender to this group. They will be sent the three questionnaires mentioned above to complete.
Group B will contain participants with hypodontia and a control group of participants without hypodontia will be matched by age and gender to the hypodontia group. Group B will be contacted before and after completion of their dental treatment and will be asked to fill in three questionnaires at both points of contact: Oral Health Impact Profile-49, Oxford Happiness Questionnaire and the Modified Dental Anxiety Scale.
Patients will be identified from clinics and electronic patient record systems from University Dental Hospital of Manchester and Guys and St Thomas’ Dental Hospital. They may also be recruited at their first consultation appointment.
This research project is self-funded by members of the research team.
