Research summary
This study is being carried out as part of a collaborative research programme between the School of Health at the University of Northampton, University College London and the University of Oxford. This study, within the ASK SNIFF programme, has been funded by WellChild, the national charity for sick children.
The project seeks to develop the content and delivery format for an information resource for parents to access for the five most commonly presented symptoms of childhood illness (breathing difficulty, fever, diarrhoea, vomiting and rash). To achieve this, the study will ask parents and healthcare professionals within Northamptonshire and Leicestershire what information, on these five symptoms, they feel that parents should have access to when their child(ren) are ill at home. Additionally, this study will ask parents and healthcare professionals about the most accessible ways in which to present this information to parents, such as books, internet, phone apps, etc. Focus groups/interviews separately with parents and healthcare professionals will be used to generate data on the content and devliery mechanisms. These findings will be integrated with research evidence on red flag symptoms in acute childhood illness, following which separate workshops with parents and healthcare professionals will be used to build consensus on the content and delivery mechanisms required. Parents and healthcare professionals may also be invited to take part in online surveys in order to supplement the workshops, if required.
