Research summary
The research project aims to investigate if it is feasible to conduct a larger scale project investigating the prevalence of ASD traits in children diagnosed with osteogenesis imperfecta (OI), a rare genetic bone disorder also known as brittle bone.
Data will be collected from Sheffield Children's Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, during routine OI appointments within the OI clinic. Information sheets and consent forms will be provided to families at appointments. After gaining informed consent, parents of children with a diagnosis of OI, will be asked to answer x2 questionnaires about their children. A demographic questionnaire asking general data such as age of the child etc, and the Social Responsiveness Scale-2 (SRS-2) which screens for autism traits in children. Data will then be collected an analysed.
As it is a feasibility study, the study aims to see if it is possible to conduct this study in this population using the SRS-2 as a screening tool. If it is feasible, the project will also estimate the required sample size that would be needed for a larger scale study of the prevalence of ASD in OI patients.REC name
