Research summary
The ASCOT-10 study has been designed to investigate the long-term, post-trial effects of the two treatments studied in the original ASCOT study. One treatment was blood pressure lowering using 'newer' drugs (perindopril and amlodipine) compared with a combination of 'older' drugs (atenolol and bendfluethiazide). The other intervention was cholesterol lowering using a statin (atorvastatin) compared with a placebo (dummy) tablet. As was done for the main trial, the long-term effects of these two interventions will be looked at separately. In ASCOT-10, we will be inviting all patients from the participating UK centres who took part in the original study to complete a health questionnaire to tell us about their health since the end of the original study in 2005. We are particularly interested in hearing about any heart history (heart attacks, angina, heart failure), strokes or mini-strokes, and whether they have become diabetic since the end of the study. We will also be inviting around 10% of patients (who will be selected at random) to return to their study centre for a single visit. In addition to completing their health questionnaire, we will check their weight and blood pressure and carry out routine blood tests (including kidney function, fasting blood sugar and cholesterol. We will also be testing pulse wave velocity, a non-invasive test similar to an ECG which gives further information about the function of the heart and blood vessels. In this way, ASCOT-10 will give us information on the long term effects, also known as legacy effects, of the study treatments used in ASCOT.
