Research summary
Formal carers in care homes are responsible for managing people with arthritis, and it is recognised that education and training are needed to improve their skills. Currently there is no routine training around arthritis or formal qualifications for carers in this area. Initially we aim to establish the educational needs of formal carers around arthritis. We will achieve this by holding focus groups with carers involved in care, interview people with arthritis living in care homes and interview senior care staff in the care home structure. This project will (i) report carers' views on arthritis education and how this should be delivered, (ii) evaluate what role people with arthritis think carers should have in their management and (iii) report how senior staff view education for arthritis. We will identify the core education and training needs for care home workers. Our longer term vision is to take the results from this study and develop these into curricula and training interventions, perhaps as part of recognised qualifications.
