Research summary
Chronic cough is a common and disabling condition. Although there are a number of treatable causes many patients have a severe cough which does not respond to our current medication. We plan to determine whether a class of antibiotics called macrolides can effectively treat such patients. We plan to recruit patients with chronic cough (over 8 weeks in duration) which has not responded to trials of standard treatment, and who have no other identified cause for their cough (idiopathic). Participants will take either azithromycin 250mg three times daily or placebo for 8 weeks. The main outcome measure will be change in Leicester Cough Questionnaire score. We plan to recruit 60 patients over 2 years.
