Research summary
MRI of the prostate plays a key role in the diagnosis of prostate diseases. However, quality of images can significantly influence the performance of prostate MRI. Lower-quality imaging can increase uncertainty and might lead to patients being given the wrong recommendations. To help solve this problem, we want to identify and attempt to control the quality of prostate MR images.
Some scoring systems have been developed to help radiologists evaluate the quality of prostate MRI. However, these scoring systems are labour-intensive and subjective. We have been developing an artificial intelligence (AI) software tool that is intended to automatically and objectively evaluate the image quality of prostate MRI, to help solve the image quality problem in a more efficient and consistent way.
In this project, we will evaluate the performance of this AI software tool in predicting the quality of prostate MRI in a real clinical setting at a single centre, Cambridge University Hospitals. The study will be a prospective study with retrospective analysis. Participants aged more than 18 years will be recruited through a list of patients who have been referred for MRI examinations of the prostate. The planned study period will be 9 months. A validated software tool for image quality assurance (QA) checks could help drive and maintain the improvements in imaging at individual centres. Future work may include validating the software in a multicentre setting.
