Research summary
Delaying parenthood is increasingly common in many high income countries including the UK. Pregnancy care is being tailored to improve outcomes for mothers and babies when pregnancy occurs after the age of thirty-five. Despite this, there have been few studies published which examine pregnancy from the perspective of the older pregnant woman.
The recognised definition of advanced maternal age (AMA) is a woman who gives birth aged thirty-five years and over.
This research aims to explore the experience of pregnancy for women of advanced maternal age(AMA) and who are nulliparous (have not previously given birth). It will focus upon the subject of ‘planning for the approaching birth’ from the woman’s perspective.
In depth interviews with women of AMA will be used in order to:
1) Gain a greater understanding of the experience of pregnancy for nulliparous women aged thirty-five and over.
2) Determine issues important to this group as they prepare for childbirth.REC name
