Research summary
This trial aims to assess the clinical and cost-effectiveness of a theory-driven, app-based intervention that promotes brisk walking among people living with cancer. Patients diagnosed with localised breast, prostate or colorectal cancer across hospital sites in Yorkshire will be invited to participate. The primary outcome is brisk walking assessed using an objective measure (an activPAL accelerometer) as well as self-report and secondary outcomes include body mass index (BMI), waist circumference, and patient reported outcomes of quality of life, fatigue, sleep, anxiety, depression, self-efficacy, and habit strength for walking. Participants will complete assessments remotely at baseline, 3 and 6 months. Participating in physical activity after a cancer diagnosis is associated with improvements in both physical and psychological functioning. This is a potentially low-cost intervention which could be integrated into routine care and increase activity levels in this group and therefore improve their health and well-being.
