  • Research summary

This study is looking at the viruses and bacteria that are currently causing airway and ear infections, including resistant infections. It will focus on children aged Children ≥3 months to ≤6 years of age in the UK and will take place over a period of two years (March 2021 through to March 2023), with participating General Practitioner (GP) practices across the UK. \nFor those participating, a nasopharyngeal swab will be taken from all children participating in the study. The doctor will gently insert a flexible swab with a soft tip into the child’s nostril. The doctor will guide the swab to the back of the nose and rotate it a few times to collect secretions. If a child presents with pus from the middle ear, a little bit of this ear fluid will be collected from the ear opening with a flexible swab.\nThe nasopharyngeal swab and ear fluid swab (if applicable) is used to do analyses for this study. The samples will be tested to determine which viruses and bacteria are present\n\nThis research may help with understanding how many infections are preventable by vaccination and with creating new guidelines for vaccination and treatment. \n
