Research summary
Anxiety is more common in individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) than in people without ASD. Currently, little is known about anxiety in adults compared to children and adolescents with ASD. Although the National Institute for Care and Health have recently made suggestions for the management of anxiety in children and adolescents with ASD, there is no guidance for adults with ASD due to limited evidence. The purpose of the current project is to explore the nature of anxiety in adults with ASD, which will inform a future project where we will develop a psychosocial intervention for adults with ASD and anxiety.
In order to address the research questions, an online questionnaire will be made available and adults with a diagnosis of ASD will be invited to participate and share their views and experiences of anxiety. At the same time, interviews will be held with ten people with ASD and anxiety and also ten people who support individuals with ASD and anxiety. This will allow us to gain a better understanding of the nature of anxiety in ASD and the impact it has on people with ASD and their families.
