Research summary
Antisynthetase syndrome is rare idiopathic inflammatory myopathy characterised by the presence of autoantibodies against aminoacyl-tRNA synthetase enzymes. Classically this condition is described as a spectrum of myositis, interstitial lung disease, arthritis, fever, mechanic’s hands and Raynaud’s phenomenon It is now recognised that there is a high incidence of interstitial lung disease in patients with antisynthetase syndrome.
The goal of our research is to retrospectively analyse high resolution computed tomography of the chest in patients who have previously been identified to have antisynthetase syndrome and interstitial lung disease, and to see if the types of antisynthetase antibodies found correlate to specific subtypes of interstitial lung disease. Our hypothesis is that certain antibodies will be more likely to produce particular types of lung disease and hence guide understanding of the disease process.
We have identified 40 patients with clinically diagnosed antisynthetase syndrome and interstitial lung disease, across two NHS trusts (North Bristol NHS Trust and Royal United Hospitals NHS Trust in Bath). This number of patients is small but is relatively large due to rarity of disease (in the literature most studies of ILD and antisynthetase syndrome are 20-30 patients).
1.The study is retrospecitve, and all the scans have already been performed for clinical reasons. No additional radiation exposure is required.
2.All information is completely anonymised with no identifiable information.REC name
