  • Research summary

This is a clinical trial in 42 male and female volunteers to find out the species of bacteria found in the mouth, gut, nose and on the skin, whether and how these bacteria are affected by the administration of antibiotics and how long any resistant bacteria remain in the body. Saliva samples and stool samples and will be collected on 5 occasions (immediately before administration, 1 month, 2 months, 4 months and 12 months post-dosing) for pharmacological and microbiological analyses. Samples will also be taken from the anterior nares and from the skin of the facial, neck and trunk areas on 5 occasions (immediately before administration, 1 month, 2 months, 4 months and 12 months post-dosing) for pharmacological and microbiological analyses. These samples will be analysed for the types of bacteria present as well as their resistance to the antibiotics tested. In addition we will also test whether these bacteria are resistant to other commonly used antibiotics. The benefit of this study is that it will provide background information on the development of antibacterial resistance and will inform health care provider to more effectively use available antibiotics.
