  • Research summary

Over the last 50 years, published information suggests that psychiatric patients are at an increased risk of developing blood clots. It is not clear why this may be the case. Some experts have hypothesised that the increased risk may be related to decreased mobility observed in this population, whilst some groups believe the increased risk is related to acute psychosis. Other research groups have suggested that it may be related the anti-psychotic drug therapy prescribed - whereby its the drugs prescribed which increase the risk. This study aims to see if global coagulation assays can detect a change in the clotting ’potential’ of blood in patients newly commenced on anti-psychotic drug therapy within the dementia patient population.
