Research summary
This study aims to ascertain whether it is possible to predict which patients with anorexia nervosa will eventually require inpatient admission. Due to the lack of research in this area, we propose a retrospective analysis of patient notes across multiple sites. To aid this analysis, a candidate factor checklist (CFC) previously created by extensive interviews with psychiatrists in the field, as well as through numerous discussions at various conferences and meetings, will be applied to the patient notes. All factors within the CFC correspond to those routinely collected clinically and the data are already available both in the Eating Disorders Service at Great Ormond Street Hospital and other participating eating disorder and CAMHS services across the country. Research packs, including a Cover letter, Information sheet and 10 CFCs, will be sent to each consenting service (CAMHS or otherwise) with the request to apply the checklist to at least 10 sets of patients notes (5 patients whom required inpatient admission and 5 who did not). The checklists will then be returned to Great Ormond Street Hospital for data analysis and findings written up with the expectation to be published in a respected, peer-reviewed eating disorder journal.
What we are expecting from each participating site [In Short]:
1. Find the case notes of 10 patients who have now been discharged from the service (5 who went on to receive inpatient admission and 5 who did not).
2. Analyse the case notes by crossing off/ticking the relevant variables set out on the checklist.
3. Send the completed checklists back to the research teamREC name
