Research summary
Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a common neurodegenerative disease. As well as the recognised effects on movement, patients suffer from a number of non-motor features, even at the earliest stages. Anxiety has been listed as the second most important issue by patients with PD and depression is the symptom most closely related to Quality of Life in Parkinson’s disease. There are currently no effective treatments for anxiety and very little is known about how and where anxiety or depression originates in patients with Parkinson’s disease, or why some patients with Parkinson’s disease are more prone to anxiety or depression than others.
This study is an observational and imaging study of patients at different stages of Parkinson’s disease, ranging from early stages to advanced Parkinson’s disease. We will examine anxiety and depression in patients with Parkinson’s disease, across disease stages and subgroups. Study participants will have a neurological examination, psychological testing, and a computer-based task. Study participants will also have brain scans (MRI) to measure brain responses correlating with measures of anxiety in different regions of the brain. By combining behavioural measures of anxiety with underlying measures of brain responses in patient groups, we can determine those aspects of emotional processing that are damaged in different forms of Parkinson’s Disease. Patients will be assessed at baseline and then invited back for reassessment after one year.
The research costs for the study have been supported by EU Commission grant (Horizon202 grant 848002). The research participants will be recruited from Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust (London), University College Hospital London, Lister Hospital (Stevenage), Luton and Dunstable University Hospital NHS (Luton), and King's College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.
