Research summary
The rotational alignment of the femur while performing total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is determined by the transepicondylar axis (TEA), Whiteside's line (WL) and posterior condylar axis (PCA). The choice of the rotational axis chosen can affect the femoral component rotation, flexion gap and patellofemoral tracking. Previous CT scan studies have analysed the relationship between the different rotational axes. However, they have not commented on the effect of posterior condylar resection depths by the surgeons choice on the three rotational axes. The aim of our study is to evaluate the relationship between the three rotational axes as measured from the MRI scans of the femur done for Patient Specific Instrumentation.
Similarly, the tibial component rotational alignment is determined by two methods. The Cobb's method uses two circles over the tibial plateau one each on the medial and lateral condyle and the line intersecting at the junction is taken as rotational axis. The other method is based on the junction of medial 1/3rd and lateral 2/3rd of tibial tuberosity. Considering the shape of the condyles of tibial plateau and the tibial tuberosity there is wide variation which we would like to study.
