  • Research summary

The present study will aim to better understand the experiences of Muslim treatment receiving eating disorders (ED) patients. Having a framework to better understand a different epistemic system can allow for sensitive discussions when considering illness perception and contribute to future development of tailored treatment programs that draw on religious forms of knowledge and meaning making. The proposed project will take a qualitative cross-sectional study design, involving the use of a semi-structured interview as the primary method and a sample size of 6-10 participants. Participants will be included in the study if they have a diagnosis of an eating disorder (anorexia nervosa, bulimia, binge eating disorder nervosa, Other Specified Feeding or Eating Disorder), identify as a Muslim and over the age of 18 years old, and under the care of a GP and community eating disorders service in NHS where treatment if indicated within the last 24 months. Participants excluded if they do not have an ED disorder diagnosis, under the age of 18 years old. The services the present study will be recruiting from does not treat avoidance restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) and therefore will not be considered in the present study. The semi-structured interview will include pre-determined questions with the aim of exploring how the individual understands and perceives their illness, how this interacts with their religious identity, what role Islam has played in their experience of the ED and finally investigate their experiences of an ED adult mental health service as a Muslim and what they feel would be valuable in terms of support as a Muslim. Whilst this method adopts pre-determined questions, the nature of a semi-structured interview has been adopted with the aim to support opportunities for open dialogue. Interviews will be transcribed and data analysis will use interpretative phenomenological analysis using NVivo.
