Research summary
The aim of this study is to explore the experiences of patients who have undergone proximal interphalangeal joint (PIPJ) replacement as part of managing their osteoarthritis.
Once joint pain and deformity become conservatively unmanagable surgical opinion is often sought. The care for osteoarthritic joints may initially be managed with minimally invasive corticosteriod injection, consulations then escalate interventions which could involve arthroplasty / joint replacement. While cohort studies by consultants and research fellows have demonstrated variable quantitative results, there is much to be discovered about the patient's view of their PIPJ replacements. This project places the patient at the centre of investigation, and endeavours to represents their thoughts and feelings about arthroplasty of the finger.
