Research summary
This study will look at the presence of maladaptive beliefs in Compulsive Hoarding (i.e. beliefs that may cause and /or maintain the disorder). Two new self-report measures based on the Beliefs about Hoarding Questionnaire by Gordon and colleagues (2013 will be developed during the initial phase of the study. the first questionnaire will look at beliefs about possessions amongst those who hoard and the second will look at the impact of hoarding and beliefs about, and motivation to, change. this study will recruit three groups, individuals with Compulsive Hoarding (n=90), Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (n=45) and Community Controls (n=45). we will then use information gathered through the questionnaires to identify the types of beliefs about possessions that are specific to Compulsive Hoarding.
it is known that compulsive Hoarding gets more severe as people get older. Therefore we also hope to look at the difference in beliefs between younger (aged blown 40 year) and older (aged above 40 years) individuals will Compulsive Hoarding. However little is know about the feasibility of recruiting younger people with compulsive hoarding as those presenting to service tend to be older. Hence this will depend on the number of younger people with compulsive hoarding that we are able to recruit.
