Research summary
The research aims to investigate, from a psychoanalytic point of view, the nature of staff responses to service users with diagnoses of personality disorder. The research will identify possibilities for improvements and developments. Services for people with personality disorder are still patchy (NICE Guidelines, 2009)and local providers are in the process of setting up and developing services. The research will be of use to NHS Trusts and other providers setting up or running such services, to managers and other staff involved in delivery and thereby to service users.
Use will be made of the assessment details of a service user as a basis for free association interviews with twenty staff from different levels of an NHS Trust. The staff will be self selected from Devon Partnership Trust staff who have an involvement with the planning, management and delivery of services for people with personality disorder. The research will be conducted on Devon Partnership Trust premises at Wonford House Hospital. An analysis of the interview material by qualitative methods will be made manually and using NVivo computer software. A reflective group will be used throughout the data analysis process. Recommendations for the development of provision for this group of service users will be an outcome of the research. The study will last for two years completing in June 2016.REC name
