Research summary
Cognitive Analytic Therapy (CAT) is a time limited collaborative therapy that looks at the way a person thinks, feels and acts, and the events and relationships that underlie these experiences (often from early life experiences). It aims to help people make sense of their situation and to find ways of making change. The study hopes to use an existing dataset of recorded therapy sessions with clients at an Adult Mental Health Service who had depression. Qualitative Content Analysis will be used to build a coding frame from transcripts of these sessions. This coding frame will provide an empirical definition of the concept of ‘exits’ (new ways of behaving, thinking and feeling) in CAT. This is a crucial concept in this therapeutic model however there is very limited research and therefore understanding of this concept. The quality of the use of ’exits’ in cases will then be compared to outcomes and ratings of the therapeutic alliance, to explore the relationship between the treatment component ’exits’ and treatment outcome and the therapeutic alliance.
